Online reflection 1

Reflection on article "From relationships to revolution, seven ways that Facebook has changed the world"

Today I can within minutes get a good overview on which of my close and distant friends who are at work, are free, at home or away. It was not too long ago we all got the advice of insurance companies and the police – trick the thief when you go on vacation.

At that time, and it was not too long ago, we got the advice to let the neighbors empty your mailboxes, mow our lawns and turn our lights on and off at random times. Let the kid's toys and tricycles stand outside the house and in the garden. Ask the neighbors to make tracks in the snow, put garbage in your garbage can. Do what You can to make Your home look like someone is at home.

Now we are completely open with where we are, with whom, countdown-apps in our status to our Thailand's holiday in Christmas.

Facebook overflowing with beach pictures, dinner pictures and status updates from our excursions. Completely without control where our Facebook-updates is copied, liked or shared. Without any deeper investigation, even after one or two “shares” the risk of my vacation picture ending up in wrong hands must be rapidly increased. The thesis that everyone on this planet is connected in 6 steps of “a friend of a friend…” (“Six degrees of separation”) should imply that even criminal on-line- elements could know exactly where me and my family are, and when we get back home.

Everything on Facebook is more or less open to potential burglars to enter in our unattended apartments and houses, to calmly clear them of our jewelry and valuables. What happened to being a little discreet about leaving a home completely unattended?

  1. I feel the same as you when i post something on facebook. I dont post much, but when i do, i only share with my friends, and only them can see my post. I dont want other people to get information about me.
    But nice reflection.

  2. Hi Stefan!

I like your approach in this reflection. This is something I have thought a lot about myself. Somewhere along the way, people forgot about the importance in being careful with what you do and tell other people. I believe it has gone in this direction as people feel they need to appear better than others, or just want to brag about something they have done or are going to do. Regardless of why they are posting these things, I think telling people on Facebook that you are going to leave your home unattended for a while, is an extremely foolish thing to do.

  3. It is really an eye-opener to read texts like this.
Most of us know that it is not really a good thing to post everything we are doing in our lives, on Facebook, but several of us do it anyway. It is hard to always be mindful about the risks, especially when you finally are going on your dream journey and things you only dreamed of is happening. In situations like that of course you want to shear it with your friends and family back home. We have become dependent on Facebook and the easy way it creates for us to shear tings with each other. But we haft to remind ourselves that more people than we may know of is reading it and maybe choose to take advantage of the information.

Good angle of incidence for the reflection task, and really good written!

  5. Hi Stefan! It was interesting to read your reflection on this specific article. My overall though after reading your text, was that you mention a good thing, that most of us hardly think about when we update our facebook status. Well, I mean the risks of course!
We have all heard it before, every coin has two sides. I think many people think its kind of rewarding to share some of their good moments in life and getting good response for it as well. Why not? It probably wont harm anyone that much. I havent personally get into any trouble due to facebook, nor did anyone in my surrounding. But I can somewhat agree with you in this matter, why do people have this strong will to share their moments with others and in worst case be badly affected by that?
At the same time, we do have facebook for a reason, and we are humans. Why should we worry too much, we arent we supposed to do what we like?
So my finally say would be that, be yourself and have fun and worry only if its needed!
